Amelia Island is famous for its million-year-old fossils, including shark teeth, pectens (rare & elusive fossil scallop shells), and bones from megafauna like megalodons, mammoths, and giant beavers - and Fernandina Fossils is the place to go to learn about them.

Start by exploring our extensive exhibits of local fossils, which include everything from the most common types of shark’s teeth all the way up to unique and unusual finds like shark’s noses, capybara teeth, and giant megs.  If you wish to find fossils yourself, understanding what to look for is the best way to improve your odds of a successful hunt.

Kickstart your skills by taking a guided fossil hunt eco-tour with our experienced local experts, who can help you understand the best hunting times, teach you hunting skills and techniques, introduce you to our coastal habitat, and show you how to read the beach and find shark teeth, pectens, and other fossils.  You can book our tours on our website under Events.

​​Fossil Identification

Bring your fossils to Fernandina Fossils to have them identified by our experts and labeled with our scientifically accurate ID cards.  Take a photo at our aquarium mosaic wall in our Mermaid Courtyard, discover new ways to display your finds, and memorialize your favorite fossil finds as meaningful souvenirs in 3D display frames, memory bottle keychains, or jewelry made with wire wrapping or resin.

Fossil Information

Our Info Center features items made to help you find teeth & other fossils, identify them, and display them in style. Our printed materials (postcards, ID cards, stickers, maps, posters) highlight and celebrate the beauty of these fossils which have been found locally, by locals and are illustrated beautifully by fellow toother, Courtney of Sterling Seven Studio. She illustrated the megalodon tooth to the left which was found on the Island in 2023.

 

We offer educational experiences for kids of all ages, including a Fossil Hunting 101 class; a fossil Dig Pit which contains the most common Island fossils and includes an ID session; souvenir-making classes to help hunters make mementos using their finds, and regular "What the Hell Show-and-Tell" events in our courtyard, where people bring in their finds, and we help identify them.  You can also learn more via our Common Fossils postcard with tips & tricks, detailed ID charts, treasure maps, and fossil hunting gear.

​Gift Shop

We buy and sell local fossils, so if you don’t find a meg on the beach, you can find one for sale in our gift shop!   We also sell fossil hunting gear, reference books, fossil-themed products, and carefully curated items created by more than 20 talented makers including Bearded Art & Leather, By Love Designs, Cedar Street Sanctuary, Colors of Amelia, Copper Lotus, HART, Island Girl Art, J Thompson Knives, Jane’s Obscure Objects, JAWS Jewelry, Julia Newhouse glass, Kali’s Art Korner,Knots N Stitches, Mallory Eclectics, Perfectly Imperfect, River of Humanity, Sand Prairie Stained Glass, Sara's Knotted Creations,Sea Shore Terrariums, Sick Fish, Snake Arts, and more. 

 

We are open 11am -5 pm every Wednesday through Saturday, and 11-4 on Sundays.  We look forward to sharing the beauty of Amelia Island and its fossil treasures with you!
